Martha Palin started the Tacoma Lariettes in 1946. The group was started not to be out done by their husbands who had started the Pierce County Sheriffs Posse. Martha was the group’s first captain. Martha’s husband introduced the team to the black light performance. This was a unique method of drill that began in 1949.
The Tacoma Lariettes designed a square dance on horseback. They also enjoyed a little bit of pole bending.
Currently there are twenty-five members of the Tacoma Lariettes. Some of these members have been with the group since 1967. The Tacoma Lariettes meet every Monday night at the Tacoma Unit to practice drills for competitions throughout the year.
You ask why join an equestrian drill team? Why not? You get to ride your horse on a regular basis, you get a great bunch of gals as friends, you get encouragement and appreciation without asking for it, and just plain old fun.
The Tacoma Lariettes have a benefit Halloween Show each year. The next one is set for October 27, 2007. We are a non-profit equestrian drill team. From this Halloween show we will donate funds to the local communities needy.
We encourage ladies of all ages to come join us. You don’t have to have a great performance horse, just bring yours and they will evaluate it and give you pointers to boot. We always encourage everyone to come out and see what we are about and what we do. So Come On Down!
